The online program
And the merger the district refused
In its final years REALM operated an online component alongside its in-person program, and in 2019 it applied to merge with an online charter organisation. The Berkeley Unified School District board declined the application in April 2019.
Two months later the board voted to revoke the school's charter outright. The sequence matters to anyone reading the closure as a verdict on the school's teaching: the board's stated concern was the school's finances, and the merger was the school's attempt to resolve them.
